Living Together
Written by Amy Viets
God made every person special and unique. That’s a good thing, because we each have gifts we can use to help share God’s love. But because we’re all so different, it can be hard to get along with people. What do you do when you’re having trouble with another person? Maybe you talk about it, tell the person what it was that made you feel bad. That’s a good start.
In today’s Bible reading from Colossians 2:12-17, we hear some suggestions for how to live with others. We need to have compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Spend some time with your family talking about what those traits look like. In Matthew 16:21-22, Jesus tells us there’s something else God wants us to do. God wants us to forgive people who hurt us. When we keep being angry without forgiving, anger grows and spreads to others, and God’s kingdom is hurt.
God wants us to forgive each other, but God also wants to help us do that forgiving. All we have to do is talk to God, asking for the right words to say and the right feelings in our hearts. It won’t always be easy. We might have a hard time forgiving, and still feel angry for a while. But guess what? God even forgives us for not being able to forgive, and helps us try again!
Prayer: Thank you, God, for forgiving the bad things I do, and help me forgive others. Help us all live together in compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Amen.
