There are now over 500 million people connected through Facebook. Through this powerful social medium, people are able to share their stories with friends, relatives, and marginal acquaintances. The stories that they share run the gamut; everything from the mundane details of one’s breakfast, to the joys of personal success. Often times, the stories that get shared come with a request for prayer or support. On more than one occasion, Facebook has informed me of a situation that has called forth a pastoral response. I think that the meteoric growth of Facebook, in just seven short years, can be attributed to our desire to share the stories of our lives.
I’ve been coming to the conclusion lately that the Bible, for all intents and purposes, is a collection of stories. Each of the writers of the Bible has had an experience or encounter with God that was so powerful, so transformative, or so troubling that they had to share it with others. But they didn’t just want to share information. These writers wanted to invite others into their experience of the living God. By connecting with these stories, our lives are changed. We soon begin to see God’s presence and activity in our own daily lives.
On September 11, we began a nine-month journey through the biblical story that we’re calling Gracebook. Gracebook follows the story of God’s people from Creation through Acts. Every Sunday, we’ll follow the Biblical plotline by exploring a key biblical story. During the course of the week, you’ll be invited into further conversation and reflection around that story. The ultimate goal of Gracebook is to help you connect to the biblical story in such a way that it shapes you and connects you to God’s big mission in the world.
